August 30, 2006:Several CFA units from across Bendigo attended a large fire at the historic St Aidan's Orphanage in Kennington tonight. Several 000 calls were recieved shortly after 8:45 PM and the first crews to arrive found a laundry building well alight. Firefighters worked frantically to bring the blaze under control while additional units from Kangaroo Flat, Golden Square, and Eaglehawk were requested. An excellent effort by firefighters brought the fire under control in just over an hour and contained the fire to half of the 60 x 20 metre structure, and prevented it from spreading to the main orphanage building. Police, Ambulance and SES units also attended the scene. CFA units were also called to a small fire at the orphanage on Tuesday night, which was quickly brought under control.
One of my photos was featured in The Age Online the following day.
Two brothers have since been charged with lighting this and several other fires in the area.
